Over three years ago, the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, returning the issue of abortion back to the states. Many people assumed Pregnancy Resource Centers and Medical Clinics would become obsolete and that abortion would end in most states. However, neither has happened.
Even though several, more conservative states restricted the extent of allowable abortions with state legislatures passing so-called “heartbeat bills” or lowering gestational age for abortion from 24 or 27 weeks, many other states, such as New York, Illinois, and California, became “abortion hubs.” Additionally, the wide availability of abortion pills via the internet allows women, their partners, and others who seek to harm women to order the drugs online.
Abortion has not ceased, nor will it in the near future. Therefore, the need for Pregnancy Centers, especially pro-life Pregnancy Medical Clinics, remains vital, if not more so, in post-Roe America.
Recent Abortion Data
Abortion data released by the Guttmacher Institute earlier this year indicates more than a million abortions were conducted by providers in the United States in 2024. This number does not reflect how many at-home abortions were done via abortion pills ordered from online sources, such as Aid Access or Plan C. Sites like these promote using abortion pills under14 weeks of pregnancy; however, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol, the two-drug regimen that makes up a chemical abortion, for only 10 weeks or fewer, and that guideline has not changed. The agency strongly recommends not purchasing the drugs online.
Women who disregard these FDA recommendations do so at an increased physical risk. Potential complications include incomplete abortion, infection, excessive bleeding or hemorrhage, and infertility. The FDA recently noted reports of 36 patient deaths associated with the first abortion drug, mifepristone, since the agency approved its use in September 2000. Two were the result of undiagnosed ectopic pregnancies, which can be detected via ultrasound, and several other deaths were due to cases of sepsis.
PreBorn! Network Clinics can alleviate such concerns by providing free ultrasounds to women considering abortion. Our Clinics connect with abortion-minded to women, offering ultrasounds by which pregnant women are introduced to their preborn babies and allowing medical professionals to assess the viability of a pregnancy. This reduces the risk of an ectopic pregnancy, a life-threatening situation.
PreBorn! Network Clinics may be called on to assist women who want to stop the abortion process after they have taken the first pill and regret doing so. Offering these women another chance to save their pregnancy through Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) ®, a protocol using the natural hormone progesterone, is another way our Network Clinics help women and their preborn babies. More than 7,000 preborn lives have been saved through the APR protocol since its inception 12 years ago.
Abortion Travel
Many pro-abortion states have seen an increase in the number of women traveling from other states to get abortions.
For example, Illinois has become a destination state for abortions in the Midwest post-Roe. Guttmacher estimates nearly 170,000 out-of-state residents converged on pro-abortion states in 2023, and though the number fell slightly in 2024, the number still stood above 150,000. Illinois in particular saw more than 35,400 abortion patients from other states with stricter laws.
Numerous corporations fund abortion travel for their female employees, as pointed out in an article in our Winter 2024 magazine issue. Some of the companies that announced funds for their employees to access abortion out-of-state if needed included Tesla, Target, PayPal, Kroger, JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Citigroup, Bank of America, Amazon, and Meta.
Additionally, several states have enacted laws that require abortion coverage within insurance plans, including private. A few of those states are Colorado, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, and Washington.
Together, we come alongside Pregnancy Clinics to reach women before they make the decision to abort or after they have chosen to travel that road and regret their decision, to extend the gift of forgiveness and to help her heal from the trauma abortion causes.
Surge in Abortion Pills and Our Response
During the past few years, the use of chemical abortion has skyrocketed, making up nearly 65 percent of all abortions in the U.S. in 2023. That has likely increased even more.
Additionally, telehealth appointments to receive pills jumped to nearly 25 percent, according to various sources, including PBS.
Numerous colleges in pro-abortion states like California, Massachusetts, New York, and Illinois now provide, or soon will provide, abortion pills on campus. A recently published study on the abortion pill and its side effects based on insurance data indicated that one in ten women experience adverse effects from the abortion pill, including infection, sepsis, and hemorrhaging. Nearly 41,000 ER visits related to the abortion pill were noted.
Thanks to PreBorn!’s virtual care system (VCS), which reaches women when they are searching the internet for abortion options, we’re able to intervene and help them process their decision. Each woman who reaches out is connected with a nurse who listens to the woman’s fears, answers her questions about pregnancy, abortion, and her options, and walks with that woman as she navigates the decision-making process.
Women are then referred to a PreBorn! Network Clinic, where they receive a free ultrasound and ongoing physical, spiritual, and emotional care, empowering them to choose life for their preborn babies. Through VCS, PreBorn! brings the light of Christ into the darkness of abortion, offering hope, healing, and a future for mothers and their children.
In addition to potential physical health risks from abortion drugs, various researchers have found that some women can suffer emotional and mental health issues after an abortion, whether surgical or chemical. Potential risks include depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. In both the virtual care services and the Network Clinics, women are offered information on pregnancy options, including the potential risks and side effects of abortion.
Abortion Pill Trafficking and Misuse of the Drugs
Every year, thousands of women and young girls are trafficked around the world. Abortion pills and surgical abortions are used by traffickers to keep their victims “working.”
From the United Kingdom to Texas, people (primarily men) have been accused of and convicted of using abortion drugs without their partners’ knowledge or consent to cause the women to lose the babies that the women wanted and the men did not.
Coerced or forced abortion happens often, and it is illegal. The Justice Foundation operates the Center Against Forced Abortions, assisting pregnancy centers to help their clients who may be experiencing pressure and coercion. Nearly 70 percent of abortions “are coerced, unwanted, or inconsistent with women’s preferences.”
Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court threw out a lawsuit filed by several pro-life organizations and doctors seeking to halt access to mifepristone, one of the two drugs used in a chemical abortion. The unanimous decision ruled that these organizations lacked a legal right to sue the FDA over the abortion drug.
Also in 2024, voters in seven states (Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, and New York) approved enshrining abortion into their state’s constitution.
Because of these and other actions, the need for the pro-life mission, including pro-life Pregnancy Resource Centers, Clinics, and organizations, remains strong.
The Need to Be Proactive
The rapidly changing landscape of abortion and the increased access to abortion pills, speaks to the need to be proactive. Our Network Clinics remain on the front lines, showing women the truth about their preborn babies through ultrasounds and introducing them to the life-changing truth of Jesus Christ. Our Clinics show life and speak life, thereby helping to save the lives of two people: mothers and their preborn babies.
In a January 2024 opinion piece published in The Hill, authors Moira Gaul and Michael J. New, who work at the Charlotte Lozier Institute, contend that, in a post-Roe America, “Life-affirming pregnancy centers continue to step up to the task by providing essential tailored services, medical care and relational and material support to hundreds of thousands of women and families.”
In their publication, Hope for a New Generation, the researchers/authors found that more than 2,700 Pregnancy Resource Centers and Medical Clinics in the U.S. provided goods and services valued at nearly $367 million, that eight in ten centers are offering medical services, and that these organizations received a 97.4 percent satisfaction rating from clients. Additionally, findings show a significant increase in programs and services offered by Pregnancy Centers, including ultrasounds, STD testing and treatment, lactation consultation, and APR.
Sadly, since the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision, state and federal government officials have criticized, attacked, and defamed Pregnancy Centers, and groups such as Jane’s Revenge have fire-bombed and vandalized facilities and organizations who do God’s work and help women during a crucial time in their lives. Even online sites such as Google and Facebook have attempted, and at times succeeded, to thwart information about pro-life Cinics and organizations, including APR.
PreBorn! and our Network Clinics soldier on in the post-Roe America. The war continues to rage in both pro-abortion and pro-life states. Abortion clinics still exist, as do apartment and dormitory bathrooms where women take, or are forced to take, abortion pills. We are here for them—for all of them—before, during, and after an abortion. We are here because you are here, because you give, pray, and volunteer. PreBorn! and our Network Clinics still need you. Roe v. Wade may be overturned, but neither unplanned pregnancies nor abortions have disappeared.
Let us continue to fight the good fight together, assisting pro-life Pregnancy Clinics as they help mothers and their preborn children.
